Kaikoura
Kaikoura has to be one of NZ's most diverse photography locations, it's not often you can capture both snow capped mountains and the sea in the same shot. Add to that the incredible marine life like whales and dolphins you can view here and it's a must-see NZ spot.
Hanmer Springs
It's not just a playground for thermal pools and mountain biking, the drive here and the immediate vicinity with the Waiau River bridge and outlook make it a photography dream too.
Arthurs Pass
Further inland, the drive through Arthurs Pass takes you through a huge variety of landscapes and you'll find yourself stopping round almost every corner. There's incredible rock structures to walk among at Castle Hill, alpine lakes to camp beside at Lake Pearson and the impressive sight of Devils Punchbowl Falls to visit in the heart of the Pass, with the possibility of spotting NZ's cheeky kea too!
Ashburton Lakes
This area has to be one of NZ's most hidden gems. Lake Camp and Lake Heron have such stunning views to the mountains which reflect perfectly on a calm day, and further inland the Rangitata river valley with the hike up Mount Sunday and views across to the Mt D'Archaic and other Southern Alps are just unreal.
Christchurch & Akaroa
The New Brighton Pier in the heart of Christchurch makes a fabulous sunrise excursion, even better if you can time it with a colourful sunrise. The drive up Port Hills, or over to Banks Penninsula and Akaroa give you plenty of panoramic, elevated views to enjoy.
