Some of the most remote and beautiful NZ landscapes are found in the Catlins. There's more lush waterfalls hidden deep in forests than you can count and amazing sweeping bays with not another soul in sight. Nugget Point lighthouse is a beacon of wild beauty in the area and greeting the sunrise here is like gazing out from the end of the earth, while taking in a sunrise at Waipapa Point lighthouse really actually is - it's almost as far south in New Zealand as you can get. If waterfalls are your thing, then Purakaunui, Matai, Horseshoe and Maclean Falls can all be found within a short drive of each other, so you really are spoilt for choice.
Further north is Dunedin and its unique coastal structures like Tunnel Beach, St Clair Beach with its dilapidated poles, and numerous pretty bays in the harbour like Hoopers Inlet with beautiful boat sheds dotting the shoreline. A trip to this area isn't complete without marvelling over the otherworldly Moeraki Boulders with its prehistoric rock shapes making a brilliant photo opportunity at any time of day.
