Northland might seem to just be an extension of Auckland, but people forget there's oodles of amazing beach, waterfall and forest photography locations to be found in the Far North, and the warm climate makes it a great option to explore out of the busy summer months.
Whangarei Falls and Rainbow Falls are two of my favourite landscape photography locations in the north, but the jewel of the crown is a visit to Cape Reinga, NZ's most northern point. It is eerily spiritual here and to spend a sunrise here is a moment that will stay with you forever. Staying a night at Matai Bay on the Karikari Penninsula, which arguably has the loveliest water and curve of any beach in NZ is a must-do as is sand-boarding the giant sand dunes at Te Paki - incredible to think NZ even has its own desert!
When visiting Auckland, a trip out to the west coast beaches like Piha, Karekare and Muriwai (with its gannet colony) is a great way to end the day. These are epic sunset locations and each beach is incredibly diverse and scenic in its own right. Within the city there are many great locations to capture a classic Auckland City skyline view like St Mary's Bay or Devonport, and visiting one of the east coast beaches with Rangitoto Island a great backdrop for sunrise.
