The Mighty Waikato. Think rolling farmland, misty mornings and world-famous gardens, not to mention the home of Middle-earth. One of the things I love most about the Waikato is how well it portrays every season - sunflowers and lavender in summer, amazing autumn colours, starry Milky Way nights in winter and delicate spring cherry blossom.
Whether you want to visit the numerous lush waterfalls in the Waikato like Wairere Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Waitanguru Falls or Marokopa Falls, or experience the amazing gardens from around the world in the the award-winning Hamilton Gardens, there's something for every nature lover here.
One of my most popular landscape images was captured in the Waikato – on a winter morning up Pirongia where the layers of hills and early morning mist and trees created the most heavenly rural New Zealand scene. It proves that you don’t need amazing snow-capped mountains or crystalline lake reflections to compose a gorgeous scene, you just need to make good use of whatever scene is right in front of you.
Another favourite local location is Te Waihou Walkway: The Blue Spring, a hidden gem that always take visitors to the area. I love that living in the Waikato gives me access to all these amazing locations and it's a great central hub to explore other regions nearby too.
